National Institute of Medicinal Materials was established according to the Decision No 324/BYT-QÄ on 13/04/1961 and was reorganized according to the Decision No 230/1998/QÄ-TTg on 30/11/1998 of Vietnam Prime Minister and the Decree No 49/2003/NÄ-CP on 15/05/2003 of Viet nam Government.

The scientific staff of NIMM consists of 222 persons including 74 graduates, 25 masters, 22 doctors, 4 associate professors.

II. Archievements :

1- Performed the survey of natural medicinal resources in the whole country. About 3948 species have been identified and 20.000 specimens have been collected and stored. Many books on medicinal plant resources have been published in different languages : English, French, Russian and Vietnamese.

2- Carried out successfully the acclimatization of 70 medicinal plant species to serve pharmaceutical industry, traditional medicine and exportation.

3- Performed the Research and Development of 50 natural drugs including several drugs of high therapeutic value : Artemisinin and its derivatives (anti-malarial), Bidentin (hypocholesterolemic), Raucaxin (antihypertensive), Morantin (antidiabetic), Abilin (for treatment of hepatitis), iodotamin (anti-goitre), Rutin C (anti-haemorrhagic), D-Strophantin (carditonic), Diosgenin (raw material for steroid synthesis), Haina (for treatment of active chronic hepatitis)…

4- Carried out the technological transfer of several natural drugs to pharmaceutical companies such as Formipharm, Ha Thanh, Thanh Hoa companies …

III. Post graduate Training activity

NIMM has been assigned the post- graduate training task in the country. Since 1979, NIMM has trained many PhD in two specialities:

- Natural medicinal materials – Traditional medicine

- Pharmacology

Beside the training of Doctors in the country, NIMM has also received scientists from many countries such as : Laos, Cuba, Mongolia, Cambodia … for scientific specialization training

IV. International cooperation

NIMM has the scientific and technical cooperation with many institutes in the foreign countries such as : Russia, Germany, China, India, Hungary, Korea, Japan, France, Thailand, Australia and Malaysia
