Scientific and technological research activities of NIMM at the stage of 2001 - 2005

NIMM has carried out 7 subjects and 2 projects of state- level, 20 subjects and 3 projects of ministry level, 5 local level subjects. Including 2 subjects and 1 project belong to the state level scientific and technological program 2001 - 2005 "Scientific and technological program for community health care", code KC.10.

RESULTS

1. Investigation into the domestic natural medicinal material resources:

Investigated natural medicinal material potential in some symbolic districts of Quang Nam province, the results showed that there were 832 medicinal species of 190 botanical families for medicine (There were 735 species belonging to 140 families according to 1978 - 1983 data), especially Morinda officinalis, a valuable medicinal plant has firstly been recorded in Viet Nam Southern provinces. For medicinal animals, there were 142 species of 98 families, including 15 valuable and rare species to be needfully protected.

2. Conservation of genic resources of medicinal plants:

Saving 697 species, including 109 rare species (group I), 86 endangered species of Red List to be needfully conserved under 1994 IUCN's assessing standard, 585 species of indigenous genic resources.

Attached special importance to the exploitation and utiligation of genic resources, to supply original strains for medicinal plant cultivation in large scale.

3. Research on natural medicinal material resources:

- Morinda officinalis: Constructed procedure of planting in family-garden, farm- garden models, applied in cultivation, bringing effective benefits to farmers.

Created two Morinda officinalis strain regions in Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa provinces. Guided people to the cultivar breeding from seeds.

Established a 2,2 ha garden with 12000 healthy seedlings.

- Constructed procedure of strain multiplication, planting technique and development planning of Panax vietnamensis Ha et grushv., Araliaceae in KonTum province. Strain gardens have been established and strains have been provided to farmers. Initiated the plant project of Panax vietnamensis to help localities with the basis for the development of this valuable, rare and endemic medicinal plant.

4. Research on screening of pharmacological, chemical activities to evaluate the therapeutic value of several domestic medicinal plants, aromatic plants, traditional remedies.

5. Development of natural drug production for prevention and treatment of various diseases:

- Agerhinin: a nasal spray produced from SP3 powder, containing saponins extracted and purified from Ageratum conyzoides, having anti- inflammatory, anti- secretory effects, now mucous membrane excitative and used for the affection of sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.

- Geranin: a preparation from Geranium nepalense. Results of clinical trials stage 1 and 2, showed that Geranin was safe and effective in the treatment of typhoid and acute bacillary dysentery.

- Dentonin: a preparation from Solanum procumbens, Achyranthes bidentata, and Eleutherine subaphylla. Results of clinical trials on 160 acute gingivitis and teeth- around inflammatory patients showed that Dentonin had good effect in the treatment of acute gingivitis and no adverse effect is observed.

- Somatan: a preparation of a specific remedy. Results of clinical trials stage 1 and 2 showed that Somatan was safe, no side- effect and markedly improved the mechanical energy of bile- stone disease.

- Angala: a preparation of polysaccarid isolated from Angelica acutiloba Kit.. Results of clinical trials on 180 breast cancer patients in 3 different hospitals showed that Angala had support effect on immune system and haematopoietic system in the treatment of breast cancer patients with chemicals, and/or radiation.

- Panacrin: a preparation from extracts of Carica papaya leave, Crinum latifolium leave, and Panax pseudo- ginseng leave. Results of clinical for trials on 180 gastric cancer patients in 3 different hospitals showed that Panacrin had support effect in the treatment of post- operative gastric cancer patients.

- Haina: a preparation from extract of Solanum Hainanense. Results of clinical trial on 180 active chronic hepatitis patients in 3 different army hospitals showed that Haina was effective in the treatment of active chronic hepatitis patients, expressed a decrease of hepatic enzyme and the amount of HBV-DNA with a serum reverse transfer in some patients.

6. Scientific research to serve community:

- State- level subject: Study the model of in- place production and supply some herbal drugs to serve the people in the rural and mountainous areas.

Subject product is a model of in- place production and supply of 7 medicinal plants and 6 herbal drugs to serve the community in the rural and mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa province.

Seven cultivation procedures of 7 medicinal plants: Abutilon indicum, Alisma plantago, Phyllanthus urinaria L., Orthosiphon spiralis, Desmodium styracifolium and Coix lachryma-jobi L.

Six herbal drugs being tested only clinical trial at the stage 1 and 2, including: Angobin from Angelica acutiloba Kit. for blood circulation enhancing, Dihacharin from Phyllanthus urinaria L. for the treatment of chronic hepatitis, Tonic granules for children, Tonic pills from ten medicinal herbs for old people, Mudanin from Momordica charantia fruit for non insulin- dependent diabetic treatment. The results proved that these drugs were safe and effective.
